Experience Japan’s Timeless Countryside in Izu! Delicious Yakitori from a Takeout-Only Shop

Pocket

Yakitori, one of Japan’s culinary delights, traces its origins back to the Edo period (1603-1868). This simple dish involves skewering chicken and grilling it, typically seasoned with either a soy-based sauce or just salt.

In the early Showa era (1926-1955), chicken was a luxury item, making yakitori a high-end dish. However, in the 1950s, the introduction of broiler chickens from the U.S. revolutionized poultry farming in Japan, making chicken more affordable and yakitori a popular, everyday food.

During this time, it was common to see butchers grilling and selling yakitori right in front of their shops. However, this charming sight has become rare in modern times.

Yet, in Ito, Izu, a few of these traditional butcher shops still exist, grilling yakitori on the premises. One such place is “Suzutake,” a takeout-only yakitori shop where they grill your order fresh on the spot.

Though it’s a bit of a walk from Ito Station and tucked away on a side street, making it hard for tourists to find, this hidden gem is worth the effort. Even some locals might not know about this place!

The current owner’s father started the butcher shop in Ito after moving from Nakaizu in 1961. The current owner has been grilling yakitori here for about 44 years.

What sets this place apart is their delicious sauce! It might not be the most polite way to eat, but pouring the sauce over rice and topping it with yakitori to make a yakitori bowl is simply divine!

Come and experience a slice of Japan’s traditional landscape in Izu!

Make sure to try it when you visit Ito!
